BREEAM ‘Excellent’ International Research Centre chooses Remeha biomass heating

Published: 28 July 2015 - Marianne Evans

A low-carbon Remeha biomass heating system has helped achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research at its new £10.4m research and teaching centre, the Sir Michael Stoker Building.

M&E Consultant Arup specified a Remeha Gilles HPK-IK 240 kW Pellet Biomass boiler in conjunction with a Remeha Gas 610 Eco Pro gas condensing boiler to provide high performance, reliable, low-carbon heating in compliance with Part L of Building Regulations.

M&E Contractor Scott Winton of Crown House commented: “I was impressed with the overall build quality of the boilers and technical support provided by Remeha from delivery through to handover. The gas boilers arrived fully palletised and well protected for the site environment. The pallet design incorporates a ramp to allow the boilers to be wheeled into position without the need for specialist lifting equipment. The biomass boiler and control panel was installed to suit the construction programme on site allowing sequencing of other trades.”

While Sheppard Robson’s striking design of the Sir Michael Stoker Building reaffirms Glasgow University’s status as one of the UK’s leading centres of research and education, the Remeha biomass heating system further complements the sustainable approach of the project and will deliver the University RHI payments over the next 20 years in addition to carbon and fuel savings.

Mr Winton added: “We were pleased with the full service that Remeha provided, engaging with the Universities Estates department to deliver in-depth client training covering the operation and maintenance procedures of the biomass boiler. Both the biomass and gas boilers have proved to be reliable since commissioning.”

The CVR was founded in 2010 and is a collaborative project between the University of Glasgow and the Medical Research Council (MRC) supported by the Wolfson Foundation and the Wellcome Trust. The new research centre located at Glasgow University’s Garscube Estate campus brings together all members of the MRC–University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research for the first time, offering state-of-the-art facilities, laboratories and learning spaces to support the very best in scientific research and collaboration into human and animal viral disease.

Remeha’s range of high performance biomass boilers provides controllable, environmentally-friendly, low-carbon heating with efficiencies of up to 96% GCV and emission levels significantly below the new minimum levels of Building Regulations. Biomass boilers are often specified in conjunction with gas condensing boilers. The Remeha range of biomass boilers is fully-compatible with our market-leading, renewable-ready, high-efficiency gas condensing boilers, offering a quality solution to energy-efficient, low to zero carbon heating from a single supplier. With our technologically-advanced range of biomass boilers, our knowledgeable team and our experience of around 600 installations across the UK, when the heat is required on demand, Remeha Commercial can help.
